LATEST AND GREATEST NEWS:
1. August 2010 Book Signings:
I was busy again this month traveling to Langley Air Force Base 13-15 August and closer by to Fort Lee the 20th through 22nd doing book signings. Met several avid readers and those wanting to try their hand in writing. My Brother, Stan, who was visiting from Minneapolis accompanied me to Langley to help out...he was amazed by all of those who stopped by to talk with me about the Trilogy and "Enough is Enough". Both were super events.
I'll be at the Main PX at Fort Eustis 17-19 September and back again at Fort Lee the 24th through the 26th. If you are in the area come by and say hello.
Hope to see you there!

2. Fictional Characters Come Alive:
Five characters from my third book in the Trilogy, "The Judgment" mixed it up and socialized with all of the attendees at the Adam's Way Trilogy Book Premiere held at the Hilton Inn Gardens in Colonial Heights, VA on 25 June. Akmed Sadat was played by Casey Roe; Captain Newman was played by Dave Sturt; Casey Jones was played by Stan Mustanski; and the two married motorcyclists were played by real-life husband and wife, G White and Cyndi Lazarowicz. The characterizations were so real that some premiere attendees actually thought the characters were there like them to enjoy the premiere.
After a social where all toasted the Trilogy's success, I opened the evening's program with "Path to the Premiere", a screen presentation overview of my start in writing and publishing four books. I then introduced my guest Dick Criswell who is a paranormal and UFO expert, and read his speech to the audience; Dick was not present due to unplanned surgery in Indiana. After reading Criswell's speech, a live phone feed was done to the hospital where Criswell answered several questions from the audience. Over half of the audience indicated they believed in life beyond our planet. The program ended with the showing of my Trilogy Video which summarized the three books; similar to a movie preview at the local theater. The program was followed by a book signing which gave all a chance to personally meet and talk with me.
It was a super and informative evening!
Hope to see you at my next event.

3. Petersburg, VA Literature for Life Festival, 22 May 2010:
I was one of the writers asked to speak to the hundreds attending this City's Festival which was held to raise the awareness of reading and literature in the community. I gave a short talk on my literary experience which is captured in my award winning book for new writers, "Enough is Enough, What All New Aspiring Writers Need to Know".
It was a real pleasure appearing at this event and a congratulations to Mayor Annie Minckins and Mrs. Kitty Hatcher of the Petersburg Public Library for putting on such a great event for the local area...besides the books and authors, there was plenty of great music by several bands, delicious food by area vendors, and activities for the kids. When next year's 7th Literary Event is announced, ensure you mark it on your calendar and attend. You'll have a great day in the Park!
4. A New Beginning:
Being my first book, I made various errors not knowing what I now know after writing and publishing four books...so I corrected it. The cover, story, excitement, and thrills are exactly the same, only the use of tenses and word useage have been corrected.
For all of you first time authors, don't do as I did; ensure you have that first work professionally edited. No matter how many times you read the final manuscript, I guarantee there are several more errors you missed.
I approved the hard copy proof on 15 May which makes the 2nd Edition ready for print and available. You can order a copy through my website or pick one up at one of my events.
If you are having difficulties and need help with your first mansucript, contact me through my website. If you are at wits end on not knowing where to start or continue with your project, I recommend my book for aspiring new writers. It has all a new writer needs to know.
Good luck and hope to be seeing you at one of my events.

5. Petersburg, VA Public Library Hosts Author:
On 13 January, I gave my presentation "Writing Your Book and Getting Published" to a great bunch of new writers and those thinking about writing their first manuscript. The hour and half went quickly but all got what they came for...a great understanding of the skills, knowledges, and tactics in being a successful first time writer.
Thanks to Latrice Noel and the Petersburg Library for having me present my third program which all have been truly a great community service. For those leaving early and missed the Questions and Answers portion of the third presentation, you can submit your questions to me at my Contact Tab; I will answer you within 24 hours.
Hope to see you at the next library presentation!

11. Eden Prairie, MN Lions' 12th Annual Golf Tournament:
The 3 August annual golf outing was bigger and better than ever as yours truly was present for a great round of golf and making acquaintances with several new writers and readers! Twenty-seven teams competed for the team trophy and to round out a great day for all--over $3,500 in prizes were handed out. As part of the grand prize raffle, I donated two copies of "Beyond Paradise" which were signed for the winners. All proceeds were given to two charitable organizations, Opportunity Partners and Eden Prairie's Meals on Wheels, which received $5,500 each. It was a great day for all and especially for the organizations which serve the community in helping those live better lives. Please get out and make a difference for those in need! Be seeing you at my next event.

12. Evolving Faith:
On 12 May, the Washington Post Writer's Group released an article entitled, "It's Possible to Embrace God and Darwin at the Same Time" which asserts one can believe in both God and science when it comes to Creation.
The Adam's Way Trilogy provides the reader a very plausible explantion to the debate of those promoting "creation science" or, more recently, "intelligent design"; and those promoting religious faith. "A New Beginning" goes well beyond those religious and scientific leaders' theories of Man's being. The book reveals that Man's creation and existence is controlled beyond our spiritual and scientific known World. Most readers of the first installment of the Trilogy get so wrapped up in the action packed storyline that they lose track of how and why the main characters have been selected as "Chosen Ones". The basis of the Trilogy's storyline as formulated, delves into a combination of both science and religion promoting the two can exist in Man's creation and existence.
The last installment of the Trilogy, "The Judgment", brings it all together as it unveils a third theory of life.
The Adam's Way Trilogy has it all--for those who enjoy being highly entertained, and those who are looking for religious and scientific answers to Man's Creation and Existence.
13. Local Newspaper Covers Story on Author:
The Progress-Index carried an article (20 April) on Rod J.'s writing endeavors covering his Adam's Way Trilogy and his soon to be published, "Enough is Enough, What All New Aspiring Writers Need to Know". Several members voiced that it is now clear what writers go through getting their manuscripts written and published.
Ruritans Forever!
15. Prince George, VA Hails Second Book:
The 7 March 2009 book "premiere" for "Adam's Way, Beyond Paradise" was an exceptional launch for the second book of the Adam's Way Trilogy. Family, friends, and readers of all ages turned out in large numbers to toast the success of the book. Joe and Angela Amato, owners of Luca's Restaurant where the premiere was held, commented afterwards that the premiere was great for Prince George, the author, and it was great having a full house! Those who did not make the event can still order "Beyond Paradise" at the author's current discount price by going to the Order Book Tabs. See you at the next event!
16. Worth Its Weight in Gold!
I just had the chance to have a conversation with an avid reader out there--G. White of Harrisburg, NC. He and his wife, Cyndi Laz, purchased my first book last year and they were ever so kind to submit their review on Amazon and sign my Guest Book. He said they were in the process of buying "Beyond Paradise" and could not wait to read it, especially if it was anything like the first book. What G. went on to say made me as humble and proud as I thought I could ever be; and for me being a new writer with only two books under his belt, I could care less if I ever sold another book. His comments were worth their weight in gold. G. told me he found my book a great departure from several of the best selling authors he has recently read. Most of the authors G. named, I will go without mentioning. He felt they were authoring books which were just mere words on the page and that they possibly lost their ability to captivate the reader since they became well-known. He found "A New Beginning" most entertaining, exciting, and addicting whereas he could not literally put it down until he finished the last page. G. said he wanted to ensure I got his message directly. What he additionally added, did bother me--he informed me he has passed their copy of "A New Beginning" on to several friends and within his family to read....and they too found my book the most entertaining "page turner" they have read in some time. What can I say to all of this? Only that I hope that one purchased copy of either of my books is not being passed around to 1,000 separate avid readers.
G. and Cyndi....thank you for reading me--you will not be disappointed with the sequel, "Beyond Paradise". Your wanting to see my book in the theaters on the big screen is beyond my control at this time, but who knows? The right people may come along and as you said, "It should be a blockbuster!"
Rod J.
17. Adam's Way Trilogy Rocks:
The Adam's Way Trilogy was not planned until readers' comments began streaming in on "A New Beginning". All wanted more of the characters, did not want the adventure to end, and nobody could put the book down until they finished the last page. The Trilogy delves into theories, philosophies, and issues which have accompanied man from his beginning. "A New Beginning" raises the question of man's creation and his continued existence. Was man created through evolution or by a Divine being? "The New Beginning" provides through its riveting storyline an answer to this most debatable question of all-time. The surprise ending did indeed lend itself to a sequel being written. The second installment in the Trilogy takes on today's world crises. The main characters, Adam Christian and Christy Mathews, are summoned to destroy a terrorist's attempt to take control of the world. The story unfolds what's behind today's diseases, world starvation, and oil crises. From the change in the current oil prices, "Beyond Paradise" has already occured! In the third and last installment of the Trilogy, "The Judgment", Adam and Christy will be summoned to save the World from complete destruction. Once again, you will be able to follow the "Chosen Ones" as they attempt to save us all.
HEARD IT ON THE GRAPEVINE:
1. It May Not Be Your Cup of Tea:
Have you ever drank some tea which was not to your liking? I have been guilty of serving tea which is not to all's tastes! Since the publication of my second book, "Adam's Way, Beyond Paradise" all readers' reviews and comments were nothing but commendable and laudatory citing the novels as most entertaining, thrilling, surprising, and ones that could not be put down until the last page. My closest and dearest person to me in the world just confessed how he wished that some of the hard lanuguage and adult situations were not in my books. He felt that the lanuguage used by the devil in "A New Beginning" was appalling. After a long discussion, he almost came around understanding that for a writer to capture any true characterization, it has to be written as the author best describes and feels it, including the use of language. My writing is how I tell my story, and not how others want me to tell it. I have and will continue refusing editors' comments and changes which are not what I intend to portray. The first two books in the Adam's Way Trilogy have adult situations and hard lanuguage which some readers object to--if you are one, then please find another "read"!
I thought long and hard on my choice of language and sexual situations to tell these stories; but what ended up in print is what I composed from my heart and soul--it may not be you cup of tea! On the otherhand, a thousand other readers are asking for refills.

2. Guest Speaker at West Liberty State College (WLSC), WV:
I recently was a guest speaker at my Alma Mater, WLSC, for their Speak Easy Program for the staff and faculty and students. I spoke on "Writing Your Book and Getting It Published". I also held two book signings along with having discussion sessions with students and staff on writing and publishing. For a writer, nothing outside of being on the Top Ten Best Selling List could have matched the success and fun of being on their college campus. Future guest speaking for me to lecture in the Creating Writing Courses at WLSC are being arranged. If you are seeking a speaker for a special program on Writing or Publishing, see the information at the Special Speaking Request section below.

1. Fiction Writer's Dilemma:
The new fiction writer's dream of landing a big publishing house and getting their work published may be just a wish which may never happen. Fiction writers do not have it easy when trying to get their books published. With the thousands of fiction writers turning out books left and right, the fiction book business is extremely competitive. When I completed my first manuscript and tried acquiring a literary agency to represent me, I found myself entering a whole new world. Writing and getting published is a tough business. Most publishing houses who handle fiction will only accept queries or manuscripts when submitted by a literary agency. So after a year of sending queries to most of the listed literary agencies handling fiction, it was evident why some agencies are above the rest. All of the research I did on query submissions, it was loud and clear that the writer has to be professional and respect the business they are entering. About half of the forty agencies I submitted a package responded. The other half, after two years have yet to respond! Most agencies were highly professional and truly represent the literary business proudly. However, some of my rejections were one-liners stating they were not interested; one agency responded by writing on my formal letter "Not for me!" Those agencies not responding and responding improperly definitely need to review their submission requirements and review the Communications Etiquette as cited where their agencies were listed in the "Guide to Literary Agents". Several literary agency rejections kept me from just becoming a hobby writer and filing away my projects one after the other never seeing print. Those agencies who read my submissions applauded my writing and urged me on in finding an agency and publishing house to publish my book since they were not taking on any new clients. On the otherhand, those rejections which were what I consider unprofessional, gave me as much determination to forge on with my writing as the laudatory comments from what I consider the "professional" literary agencies.
While attending the South Carolina's Writers' Workshop in October of this year, I decided to attend a discussion panel comprised of six literary agencies who either were represented by the owner or an agent. (Approximately four hundred writers, editors, literary agents, and publishers attended the workshop.) I was extremely happy I attended, not only for networking but to gain more knowledge in the literary world. It solidified any of my questions I had about agencies and my decision to go self-publishing. From the questions asked from the attendees, very few of the panel members agreed on their answers. Lesson for those submitting queries to an agency--you must research that agency and ensure what exactly they are looking for in a manuscript. This became apparent when the panel members could not agree what constitutes the various types of fiction, e.g., literary, commercial, thriller, etc. This is key since you are to categorize your book's genre when submitting a query. Each agency is like a shoe: you need to try each one on for it proper size.
The writing business was put into perfect perspective when the panel was asked how many new authors did they take on as a new client in the last year. Out of the six agencies, a total of six writers were taken on as clients. The follow-on question was, "Out of those six new clients, how many were unknown and submitting to you on their own?" Their answers totaled zero. All six were recommeded by someone in the business. Several of those in attendance were in awe, but several who have run the gamut of trying to acquire a literary agency were smiling as much as I. Out of thousands of ficton writers trying to acquire a literary agency to have their book published by a big-time publishing house, it will most likely never happen unless you are known or have an immediate tie to an agent.
So what does a fiction writer do to get their first book published? I found that self-publishing is the road to take in getting started. After my research, I entered an agreement with Booksurge, a self-publishing company and subsidiary of Amazon. My dream of seeing my first book published, though not through a well-known Publishing House, came true. You can get more information on Booksurge at my Resource Tab.
No matter what avenue you go down, good luck! Stay focused and believe in yourself.

1. Steve B. of Midlothian, VA writes, "I was in your seminar at the Midlothian Library a few weeks ago. I am writing a non-fiction book, but do you know if I have to get permission from an author if I want to use his story as an example in my book or do I just site the the story as theirs?" AND "I found a book of short stories and one of them fits as a perfect example of the point I am trying to make in my Christian non-fiction. Am I allowed to use that story and just site it or do I need permission from the author or publisher?"
Dear Steve,
On your first question, you can reference any work which is in the public domain if you give acknowledgement to the writer and book. Use a footnote if you're using a quote or passage and put the author's name, publisher, date of publication and work in your bibliography. Writers should never use passages, storyline or other portions of another writer's work without author's permission; should be in writing since it would be plagiarism and could lead to legal action.
On your second question, I cannot give a legal answer on the use of another author's story. If you'll be using the story, I recommend getting permission from the author if self-published or from the publishing house since they own the book. However, as I mentioned previously, using another's work as a reference can be done with proper acknowledgement in footnotes and bibliography.
Good luck in your book.
Sincerely,
Rod J.
2. Audrey V. of Richmond, VA writes, "I missed your seminar at the Midlothian Library and wanted to know how to go about having a publisher actually write a book for you and all you have to do is basically provide the information and memoirs for them?"
Dear Audrey,
I'm sorry but I really can't recommend a publisher to write your memoirs from information provided to them since I never dealt in that area. I do know that individuals contract with writers to do their literary work for them; I'm unaware that a publishing house or company would provide that service. I know of no other writers who perform that service or I would be glad to furnish their name, etc.
I have been asked by several individuals to write their story for them, but I cannot take any other projects on at this time. As I informed them, try looking on the web under "ghost writer"....there are several who provide writing a story or a book for a set fee for anyone wanting to get their work published.
When you get to the publishing phase, I would be glad to advise you. My new book for new writers, "Enough is Enough, What All New Aspiring Writers Need to Know" is an excellent reference for when and how you publish your work.
Best of luck in your endeavor.
Sincerely,
Rod J.
3. A question from a young lady who attended my presentation at the Petersburg, VA Public Library, which is the first basic step in writing your first manuscript: "What format and type do I need to use to begin my manuscript?"
It all depends on who you are going to submit the manuscript for publication. For printing companies, they have varied specifications for any product which they will print. All of those specific directions are provided by those companies.
Manuscripts which you will submit to a literary agency or publishing house normally want the product to be double spaced and will provide any additional submission requirements. Microsoft Word would be the best to use since all contents can be modified to any specification.
I used Microsoft Word and found it to meet all of my required submission requirements to Booksurge, my self-publishing company. My first manuscript, I doubled spaced it but found with my next two manuscripts, single space was acceptable. Using Microsoft Word, you can manipulate line spacing, page size, etc., to meet any submission requirement.
4. Question: Adam B. asks, "I am in the publication process with my first book and was wondering where I can get it edited?"
Dear Adam,
There are various means to have your manuscript edited. You can look locally for editors who would work with you, or you can submit your manuscript to a self-publishing company, which more than often offers editing by a set price per word. I have been using my self-publisher, Booksurge, who will do various levels of editing. The prices do not vary much from one company to the other and all services offered are on their websites. Talk with the companies' consultants and see what would right for you.
But before submitting your manuscript for an edit, you should read
it twice and you will be amazed how many typos and errors are found. Then I always recommend a good confidant to read it also and ask for that person to annotate typos and needed changes for your consideration to revise it. From these reads, your manuscript should be well in the "ball park" and is ready for a professional edit.
Good luck on your first book!
Rod J.
5. Question: Brynne from Wheeling, WV asks, "What can I do--I am in the middle of my story and do not know how to continue to finish my book?
Dear Brynne,
Let me ask, "was your outline only taking you to the middle of your story?" All writers need to do an outline before doing any composing on their books. Only if the outline covers the main points of the beginning, middle and ending of your story, you would not be in the middle and not know how to continue on with your story. Some authors do very detailed outlines taking months before doing any writing. I do a brief outline of my story as I want it to be told and follow it as I go; of course, a lot is added or changed as I compose. It is not too late for you to continue your book. Just think of how you want to tell the rest of your story and make an outline of it. By doing an outline, it is your map from beginning to the end of your story. Hope this helps.
Good luck!
Rod J.
6. Question: M.S. from Frederick, MD asks, "Is there anything I can do to keep me focused so I can finish my book; I just cannot seem to get it done."
Dear M.S.,
Writers have various methods to keep them on track from start to finish with their writing a book. I have used some enablers which were highly successful for me. In my speaking engagements and lectures, I address my "Tactics To Stay on Course" which got it done for me. Simply, here is what I did:
1. I publicized my goals.
2. I sampled an excerpt with my "worst critics".
3. I reported my progress to family and friends on a daily basis.
4. I treated my effort as my job.
5. I practiced my 3 "R's": Read, Revise, and Run. (I read the prior chapter before proceeding; I revised accordingly; and then I ran until I finished the next chapter.)
If you practice these tactics, I am sure you will be able to find success.
Good Luck!
Rod J.
7. Question: An aspiring new writer from California asks, "How do I find a publisher to get my manuscript printed?"
Dear Aspiring New Writer,
Finding a literary agency to represent you in dealing with publishing houses is dependent upon your book's genre and simply, your notoriety. If your book's subject matter is in demand and you are well known, you will have no trouble finding a publisher. But in the fiction world, a new or unknown author's becoming a client of a literary agency with publishing house is like winning a state lottery. Most fiction writers, like myself, self-published their first books. In self-publishing the author owns, finances, and markets 100 percent of his/her book. There are several good self-publishing companies who will perform any service for the author to get his/her book in print and distribution. Those services range from complete edits to interior and book cover design. Packages are normally offered for set prices which best fit your needs. My publisher, Booksurge which is a subsidiary of Amazon, did a super job and my working relationship with their staff was nothing but outstanding. When you choose a literary agency or self-publishing company, ensure you are completely satisfied with your decision. Good luck with your writing endeavors and your book's publication.
Thanks for your question.
Rod J.
8. Question: From an anonymous reader from MN asks, "Did you write "Adam's Way" for the reader (taking ideas from other sources which would interest the reader), or did you write it strictly from what you personally wanted?"
Dear Reader,
I wrote my first book on an idea I had for a long time but did not have the time to write it due to my heavy job work load. After retiring I found the time to devote to my long lifetime ambition of writing. After bouncing the storyline off of my Brother, Stan, he encouraged me to write "Adam's Way". From that point on, I wrote the novel based upon my own vacation and traveling experiences; my college studies; and of course, my own ability for creating the story I wanted to tell. At times, I had to consider the impact of the readers' intrepretation, but I portrayed the characters and story as I wanted.
Thanks for your question.

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM.
These are true experiences I personally encountered and are so good, they just have to be told.
1. Have you ever heard of lightning striking twice in the same place? Well, in a way it certainly did on my August trip to Minnesota where I combined some vacation and business time.
When guest speaking to the Hopkins, MN Rotary Club, I began by telling them my secret of being struck by lightning twice. I told them of my accident some thirty-eight years ago when I was going into Naval Basic Training at Great Lakes, Ill. The week before going into the Navy, I visited my Brother, Stan, and his wife, Evelyn who lived outside of Chicago. When unpacking my bags, I realized I did not pack any shoes and had only the low-cut basketball shoes, which I was wearing. For my visit, Stan had made reservations to a dinner club which had a dress code...all male patrons had to be in jackets and ties. With much discussion over my attire, we went off anyway to dinner and I was the sight for all to see--a white buttoned-down dress shirt with tie, blazer, blue jeans, and tennis shoes. Guys just didn't dress that way back then.
As I continued speaking, I informed the Rotarians it was not long after my embarrassing dining out, I recognized that I was in fact a trend setter when I began to see male guests on all of the talk shows wearing a coat with tie in jeans and tennies. That first lightning strike was not too damaging except for my Brother's dismay that I was inappropriately dressed for our special exclusive night in dining out.
Now, I was ready to speak of the Second Lightning Strike. I relayed that when I arrived in Minneapolis a few days ago and began unpacking, I had a big surprise--I did pack dress shoes this time, but the shoes were of different styles and, of course, both were for the left foot.
Being a creative person, I knew what I needed to say. I told the Rotarians that when the next author was to be a guest speaker, they needed to ensure he/she was dressed to kill, but of course, they should be wearing sandals. I was convincing that authors do wear sandals in lieu of shoes.
Yes, I showed-off my footware. After doing so and calling attention to my somewhat unusual footware, I really do not think anyone noticed beforehand that I was wearing sandals.
2. Viva Las Vegas! I took off a little time while waiting for my next book's return from the editor and took Deb to Las Vegas. I have been there several times and always stayed up at the "modern end" of town (MGM Grand, Paris, Luxor, New York/New York, etc.). This time, after never making it down to the older part of town, we stayed at the Golden Nugget.....right dab in the middle of "Old Vegas". Let me tell you, it was the best visit to Las Vegas ever!
You have not done anything until you have the "Fremont Experience" (which is the main street of the old Vegas strip). Two and a half blocks of Fremont Street has been covered by a screened dome, and at night there is a musical video show projected onto it overhead. It is like going to an IMax presentation. Even if you do not like U2, Steppenwolf, and Don McClean, you cannot help getting into a highly celebratory mood when hundreds of folks are drinking, dancing, and just having a good old time in the middle of the street. Oh! I forgot to mention that Fremont Street is blocked off and is a walking mall through all of the casino resorts located there. Free live bands, dancers, and other performers do free concerts and acts on the two large street stages....can't get any better than this if you are wanting to have the time of your life. I highly recommend it to all who are thinking about visiting Vegas.
Now for the real fun! While in Vegas you do not have much time to sleep since you are almost going 24 hours continuously getting in all of the gambling, sight seeing, and entertainment. So one begins to feel the drain of energy beginning to take hold in no time at all; not to mention the three hour time difference from EDT. After two days and two nights of going with only a few hours sleep, the morning shower was the key in reviving this old tiring body. On the third morning I managed to get into the shower without incident and got the water temperture just right. I began scrubbing up with a great bar of Golden Nugget's fragranced soap....I ran the bar of soap over my weary body for over three minutes and wondered if I had stumbled onto a new type of soap--after minutes, there was no soap suds. When the bar slipped out of my hands and hit the shower floor, I picked it up to feel a film completely over the entire bar of soap. Yes, I was lathering my body up for minutes with a bar of soap with its transparent wrapper.
When visiting Vegas, you all have to try the "Fremont Experience", but check the neat looking bar of soap before lathering up!
3. Talk about being distracted while driving a car! It was not a case of cell phone use, seeing a disabled vehicle, or glocking at an accident along side the road--it was a case of writers' creativity. As you all know, I have planned to begin my last installment of the Adam's Way Trilogy later this year; but I have been mentally mapping out the story line when I have any chance for a relaxing moment. I was on my way to take my Jeep in for servicing and was having a very relaxed drive getting to the dealership. The ideas began clicking as never before and I began mentally outlining the "Judgment's" opening. I continued with my thoughts beginning with the book's opening and moving the characters right along in action which the readers will find most entertaining. Suddenly the traffic light up ahead was turning red so I began to make my stop. When I came to a full stop and looked around, I found myself sitting a few miles past the Jeep dealership where I was planning to go. I turned around and headed back to my destination. As I sat in the customers' lounge waiting for my Jeep, I hurriedly jotted down my ideas on a borrowed piece of paper so I would not forget what would be the first three or four chapters of my new novel. As I have told all--when creativity hits, you have to be ready then and there to capture those once in a life-time thoughts.
Be safe in your driving!

4. For all of you who are work-alholics and work into the late night hours will enjoy this one! I just finished redoing my Website's Homepage and it was well beyond 11:00 PM. I had one glitch and that was my pic I used was taking several seconds to download when entering the site. So I sent off an email to my WebforAuthors' Marshall Turner and asked him to check out the pic and to see if he could do something with it. In the past, Marshall has supported this low-tech with the best support there is making my website super. I tried again to enter my site's homepage through the authoring system and found it still was taking my pic forever to download. I logged-off my authoring site and thought I would check my website on-line. As I entered the site, everything immediately popped-up including my photo. Boy, did I screw up! Immediately, I sent off another email to Marshall telling him to cancel my email request which asked him to see if he could make my photo download instantly when entering the site. Off it went with a click of the Send button. I then saw I had an email and thought I would open it before retiring for the night. It was an email from Marshall saying he had done his thing and all is fine on my homepage. Wow! That was quick. I responded immediately thanking him so ever for his great support and turn-around time. It is great to have great service provided even when it is well into the night! My hat is off to Marshall Turner of WebforAuthors.
5. What can I say about our youngest generation! They are smarter and more intelligent than ever. When I was a toddler, I found I did not have to talk since my older brother of five years did all of my communicating----so I was a very late talker. When I hit the academic world in First Grade, that is when I began learning the alphabet and gradually moved along to numbers which came in the second grade. "Dick and Jane" was a very advanced read. Back then, there were no nursury and pre-school programs in which children at a very early age could learn the basic writing and communicting skills. We recently attended a neighborhood get-together and my three year old grand-daughter, Sydney, was present and was showing off her new purse which she goes nowhere without. Of course, she has all of the loose change she could gather up from Grandpap and Grandma. As she was keeping herself entertained by pouring her $1.35 in coins on the coffee table and was rearranging them in stacks, one of the guests took a one and twenty dollar bill out of his wallet. He then smiled and asked Sydney which bill did she want for a trade for her coins. Without a blink, Sydney reached out and grabbed the $20 bill and thanked him so kindly. Our youngest generation is indeed more advanced than their grandparents' generation!
6. Traveling back to WV recently, I called Deb to let her know I arrived safely. Just by chance, the area code there and ours in VA is one off, and I should mention also that I was a resident of the Mountain State for 27 years and made many phone calls to that area code. When calling Deb, I dialed our VA phone number but used the WV area code. When the phone was answered by a male voice saying, "Lollie"; I first thought it was Deb's son pulling a prank on me. After I quizzed the voice on the other end, I then realized I did in fact call the wrong number and apologized and hung up. The next day, I repeated my mistake and called the WV number again believing I was calling home. This time, the man asked if I was calling VA. I explained I was visiting and was dialing the area code by mistake. We wished each other a good day and both hung up. Lightning does strike more than twice in the same place--on my third call home later that evening, I repeated my dialing error again. This time when the same man answered, I pleaded complete igorance and said I would not dial the number wrong again. Again we traded warm goodbyes. On my return drive back to VA the following day, I called home again, and yes I did it again--I had the privilege of talking with the man who I thought by now would be getting quite angry with my misdials. I said I was leaving WV and driving back to VA and I would not be calling him anymore. Instead of getting a blast from the man who I have been bothering for a few days, he said, "Hope you enjoyed your visit and please do have a safe drive back to VA." I thanked him and said it was nice talking with him over the last 3 days.
7. On my recent speaking and book signing trip to my Alma Mater, West Liberty State College, I was as busy as a beaver trying to get on campus where I had to be, plus I took the time presented to visit family and friends in between. At times it was hectic. So hectic that I still have not found my reading glasses which I left somewhere along the many places I landed throughout my visit. When getting ready the morning after I lost my glasses, I was in the bathroom doing my normal routine after showering. When I squeezed the toothpaste onto my electric brush, the contents poured out of the tube and into the sink....I did not think too much of it and thought possibly the tooth paste just got funky from being in my travel bag. I began my brushing with my electric tooth brush with full vigor only to find my mouth exploding within 2 seconds. Without my glasses, the tube definitely looked like my Crest tube. You'll never have a wakeup call as I until you brush your teeth with Flexall (muscle relaxer)!
8. You ever have one of those days when you don't know if you are coming or going? Things have been very hectic getting my second book to the editor and promoting my first book, not to mention all of the normal daily tasks which need tending. I had my list of 10 tasks to do on Monday and I was off like a flash first going to the Post Office, then to the bank, and finished my third stop at the drug store. I was on my way to the mall to replace my damaged washing machine, which I did not mention, poured gallons of water everywhere but the drain that morning. I called Deb's Mom to tell her after I hit the grocery store after all of my other errands, I would be by her place to check her car which was acting up lately. When I was finishing my call with Joanne, I looked down where I always keep my cell phone when I am driving and did not see it. I reacted in dismay and informed Joanne that I had to retrack my steps because I left my phone at either the P.O., bank or drug store. I did not appreciate her humorous recommendation in telling me to call them first before going back to any of those places. She then politely informed me that I could do so since I was talking to her on my cell phone. After a good laugh and saying goodbye, I was really glad I was talking with her on my cell phone before driving miles back retracing my path to the previous various stops.
9. While visiting my Brother, Stan, and Sister-in-law, Evelyn, in Minnesota recently, I had the opportunity to dine at Dangerfields in Shakopee. The ambience was superb and I deeply regretted that Debbie was not with me since she had to return back to Virginia earlier due to her work. So it was Stan, Evelyn and I for a great night of dining out. Both insisted that I take the seat at our table which had a great view of the lake and outdoor deck. As we began our appetizers, I noticed that several people were socializing on the deck down below us. I then noticed two very attractive women who began looking up at me and were transmitting terrific smiles. At first, I thought they were communciating with another person who was up on our level, but I soon realized the waves of attention getters were directed at me. In all of my years when I was single, I never had two super, good looking gals sending the typical let's get together signals. As their smiles and laughter continued towards me, I encouraged Evelyn to turn around and let them think we were a couple. The smiles continued when at last, the cute blonde signaled for me to come down to them. I signaled back with a lip synch saying "No, not tonight." My conveyence was true to form as both of the gals disappeared into the crowd. As we were mid-way through our entrees, I noticed Evelyn looking over my shoulder and she said, "Did I have you in school?" This is common for her since she has been teaching for several years and constantly runs into her ex-students. As I turned, the lovely blonde who was signaling for me to join her was with a gentleman standing at our table. The first thing out of the man's mouth was, "You are not Butch!" The gal exclaimed, "I am so sorry; I made a big mistake, we were all looking for Butch and I thought you were he." She then began scurrying off feeling as embarrassed as all get out. Over the laughter coming from her companion and my table mates, I graciously informed her that she definitely made my night out in Shakopee. Our waitress then informed us that there was a 1983 High School Reunion downstairs. After finishing my delicious pan fried walleye with wild rice, I meadered off to find the young lady and to inform her that this story was just too good not to be told. I found her and her companion who turned out to be her husband downstairs in the reunion crowd. As we talked I found they were avid readers and were very pleased to meet me. I informed Wendy that somewhere in my future writings this night had great potential for being caputured in print. I returned quickly upstairs to inform Stan and Evelyn what had really transpired, and I was definitely not Butch. Evidently, all of Weny's ex-classmates did not get the word. When I began leaving our table, several of those below began waving at me and I could read their lips, "Hey there is Butch!" I eagerly waved back giving them all notice that their ex-classmate, Butch, was indeed "leaving the house".
10. After a day of trying to find a replacement light fixture for my shower, I finally found a major lighting and appliance showroom near Richmond, VA which had what I needed. (Yes I do other things besides writing!) The young lovely Anna who assisted me found the exact light fixture in Iowa and said I would have it in four days. While typing up my order, I had the opportunity to do some book marketing and asked if she enjoyed reading. I hit paydirt! Since Anna is an avid reader, she gladly accepted my business card with website. She was extremely pleased meeting an author and said she would tell her family and friends about my book. An ecstatic Anna escorted me back out to the front door with a very pleased and happy customer. As we walked up to the front door, the front desk attendant, Sara, who was busily working at her desktop asked if I got what I needed. I replied with a big yes and then it hit me; if Anna is a reader, possibly Sara has to be one also. As I looked at Sara, I asked in my best marketing tone,
"Do you read?"
Her eyes focused onto mine and I could read her response from her piercing glare. Her eyes relayed her response loud and clear,
"Of course I can read you idiot, how do you think I am doing this job?"
After a second which seemed much like an hour, Anna burst out laughing followed by Sara's. As I tried hurriedly to rephrase my question, she informed me politely that she did some reading and it all depended on the book. Sara accepted my business card with a big smile and said she would check out my website. As I walked out to my car, I made a mental note to ensure when asking individuals if they enjoy or like to read, I am never to ask them,
"Do you read?"
SAYING IT BEST! This section is for direct messages to individuals and groups who had an Adam's Way experience.
1. Kathy of Ohio:
I am sorry you found the first book in the Adam's Way Trilogy not beneficial. Up to your returning my book on 17 Dec, all readers have found the reading most entertaining and a book they could not put down until they finished the last page. The adult situations and man's creation and existence within the story may not be for all readers. It is a fictional work and the benefits are in the acceptance of the beholder. I appreciate your candor and wish you the best of reading.

2. West Liberty State College (WV) President Capehart; Alumni Director, Mr. Ron Witt; and Alumni Office Staff:
Thank you so much for having me as a guest at WLSC through Homecoming Week. My speaking at the Speak Easy Program, doing the booksignings at the campus bookstore and Homecoming Festival, and speaking to the staff and students on writing and publishing was truly enjoyable and one of the best times I have had. Returning home to the Hilltop Campus was so rewarding. I am looking forward in coming back to do more speaking and discussing writing and publishing with the staff and students.
Achieving is Believing!
I am a Hilltopper!

The donation given was made possible from those who purchased my book during the months of July and August in which I gave 100 percent of my royalties. MEDIA ROUND-UP:
1. Article from the Progress-Index, 20 April 2009, 4:12 AM EDT:
Prince George author is self-taught, self-published
By Patrice Rivers
Staff Writer
PRINCE GEORGE-Rod J. Mustanski worked for the Department of the Army as an instructional systems specialist at Fort Lee in 1977 when he realized he had a knack for writing.
While at Fort Lee, Mustanski gained some writing experience, such as writing reports and sports articles for a magazine. Most of his work was submitted for professional publications.
In his last years at Fort Lee, Mustanski spent 10 years as
the Chief of Quartermaster training, responsible for developing and providing resident/non-resident training materials to over 115,000 active and reserve soldiers worldwide. He learned through writing newsletters, sports articles and reports along the way, that writing could become a serious and a permanent job.
So after 31 years working for the federal government, Mustanski retired in 2004 in order to devote himself to a new career as a writer. So far, the self-published Prince George author has two books under his belt - the first two parts of a trilogy - with other books planned.
"Since I was 4 years old, I loved telling stories," Mustanski said. "I was considered talkative. At the movies when I was a child, I would watch the double features and told stories from them. Normally, I would tell the whole neighborhood the stories I made up. I enjoy entertaining people," said Mustanski.
The West Virginia native's first novel, "Adam's Way, A New Beginning," was published in April 2008. The novel is a mixture of suspense and science fiction that follows a vacationing Adam Christian into an adventure where the fate of the planet hangs in the balance.
The second novel, "Adam's Way, Beyond Paradise," was published Jan. 20, and continues to follow the adventures of Adam as he and his partner attempt to destroy a terrorist organization's plan to seize control of the world.
Having free time at his office in his Prince George home, Mustanski makes his own schedule for the hours he works on chapters of his books.
"I love having fun and doing what I want to do," he said. "I consider it as a job. You've got to have the time."
Mustanski is an avid sportsman and spends his time hunting, fishing and golfing. He and his wife, Debbie, have five children and 10 grandchildren. He is currently working on the final novel in the trilogy, "The Judgment," which he plans to publish in late 2010.
With a notebook in hand, Mustanski is ready when a story idea or phrase pops into his mind - whether sitting at a stop light or waking up in the middle of the night.
"I devote myself to it. I spend evenings, nights and early mornings writing down ideas. You already know what you are writing. I would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night writing just dialogues," said Mustanski.
In addition to his two novels, Mustanski is branching out with a third book on steps to go through when writing. The books focuses on the skills a writer will need when getting started on a novel.
Mustanksi spends additional time doing book signings in the area, speaking at luncheons and programs, and leads programs on how writers complete their books and how they would get published.
"I speak about experiences and the theme that I go along with is entitled "Achieving is Believing," said Mustanski.
Mustanski went the traditional route to become a published author and met with the same challenges as others. After spending nearly two months writing his manuscript, Mustanski submitted 40 queries to literary agencies. He waited for a year to get accepted with no luck.
So he went the self-published route.
Mustanski has taken on the role of promoting and self-publishing his own books.
"It takes too much time with self-publishing, but I do like meeting a lot of new people and learning new stuff. I also like to share my experiences," said Mustanski said.
Mustanski also writes reviews on his Web site - www.rodjmustanski.com - to get feedback from the viewers. He is practicing advertising and promotion through his Web site.
"Its a full-time job, but I want to see results. The job is very time-consuming, but there is no guarantee for publicity," he said.
"I am putting in a lot of time and money," said Mustanski.
